As I sat on the other end of the phone listening to this Executive Vice President (EVP), one whom I held in very high regard, utter those words I knew something within the Corporate model was broken. 

After working for decades within the industry this individual shared with me that the thought of retirement was something they would entertain in a few years and maybe actually happen in 10 years. 

This would place them close to 80 years of age, well over the age of when they had planned to retire.

I thought to myself “Is this what being a Senior Executive is?” 

If so, I wanted zero part in it. 

But just as my colleague had a decision to make about the future of their career I had the same decision to make which prompted an internal question. 

And, that was “How much of myself was I willing to give up for the company I worked for?” 

I paused. The pause was for longer than I expected not just a few moments but the pause lasted for a few days. 

And, that is when the answer came. 

What if more was available for myself along with the company and it required less of me independently and more of the team collectively. 

The answer intrigued me but the next question invigorated me. 

How do you move an organization from being singularly driven to purposefully driven?

It requires a system that is designed to leverage people and processes to support profitability however all systems will only be successful if the leader of the ship also has a system to grow in their role, in other professional and personal aspects as well.
